WORKING CLOSELY WITH UNIVERSITIES AROUND THE WORLD, THE HIGHER EDUCATION SOLUTIONS NETWORK AT USAID SUPPORTS SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH ACROSS EVERY SECTOR TO BUILD A CLEARER UNDERSTANDING OF THE PROBLEMS WE FACE AND DEVELOP EFFECTIVE SOLUTIONS.
Today’s global development landscape is rapidly evolving. Scientific breakthroughs, disruptive innovations, and rapid advancements in information and communication technologies (ICTs) provide powerful tools to address long-standing challenges. Additionally, new models of partnerships are increasing the opportunity for development organizations, academic institutions, the private sector, and others to collaborate. These changes offer unprecedented opportunities to leverage the world’s best thinking to solve critical global development challenges.
Recognizing the value of a more focused and coordinated approach to harnessing these changes, USAID established the U.S. Global Development Lab (Lab) in April 2014. The Lab serves as an innovation hub, working in all technical and geographic areas. We take smart risks to test new ideas and partner within the Agency and with other actors to harness the power of innovative tools and approaches that accelerate development impact.
The Lab leads the charge on using scientific research for improved development impact. Working closely with universities around the world, we support scientific research across every sector to build a clearer understanding of the problems we face and develop effective solutions. Our programs also collaborate with development practitioners and governments who want to integrate evidence within their policies and programs. The result is a vibrant framework of cooperation between local actors, development professionals, and academics who know that innovation and data is key to tackle the complexities of modern-day development challenges.
The Lab’s science and research programming is currently centered around three flagship programs:
- Higher Education Solutions Network
- Partnership for Enhanced Engagement in Research
- Science Policy programs: Includes USAID Research Policy and Coordination, American Association for the Advancement of Science: Science & Technology Policy Fellows, Jefferson Science Fellows, and Research and Innovation Fellows
